Hola, I’m Lisa Valencia, your host at Hidden Jungle Beach House. I’m a writer and Costa Rica guide who has lived in Costa Rica’s Caribbean since 2007. This guest house is something new for me. Let me tell you about it…

NOVEMBER 5, 2011: Two years ago my daughter came to visit me here in Costa Rica – and stayed. Recently she opened a cute little guest house and named it Hidden Jungle Beach House. Now that she’s got it up and running she wants to be up and running, too! What’s a mother to do? Step in and take over, of course. I’m taking care of my daughter’s place for the next few months, while she goes off to explore Central America and Mexico. I love a new project! I’m very excited about the prospect of extending some Caribbean hospitality to my friends and readers.
FEBRUARY 2, 2012: Three months later and the place is mine! As it turns out, my daughter loves the life of a vagabond and I love the life of a hostess in this tranquil jungle setting. I love the place: this house is so comfortable and pleasant. I love the jungle: iridescent Blue Morpho Butterflys, exotic birds chirping, sloths right outside the window and the ever pounding waves on the nearby shore. I love the life: the place seems to attract the most interesting of people from all over the world. I have hosted guests from the US and Canada, England, France, Holland, Argentina, Venezuela, Iran, India and of course Costa Rica. The French ladies cleaned my kitchen; the chef from Denver made some delicious meals; the Venezuelan Minister of Agriculture told me how to improve my composting; the couple from India want to send their 15 year old son back here to stay with me for surfing. And I’ve worked on the place to really make it my own. I’ve painted all the rooms, the stairway, the kitchen; I’ve repaired and refreshed things too numerous to recount; I’ve planted flowers; put in walkways and I’ve made the place into a really nice guest house. Below are photos and a detailed description.

One of the best things about Hidden Jungle Beach House is it’s location. It’s very private, situated in a hidden spot back in the jungle, yet just a three minute walk to one of the Caribbean’s most breath taking beaches, Playa Negra or Black Beach. You can walk right into Puerto Viejo from here as well. It’s only five minutes away.

Hidden Jungle Beach House is a typical Caribbean style wooden house with three levels. The kitchen is on the first floor. The bedrooms are on the second. And the third floor is my room – my tree house – with windows on all four walls, looking out into the jungle! The first floor kitchen is spacious and open, with jungle all around. The grocery store is only a short jaunt away so you can buy what you need and cook it here. Sunday nights we make Rondon, an authentic Caribbean dish, over an open fire. The shared bathroom with a hot shower is on the first floor.

Rondon is the local patois for “run down,” as in “I’m gonna run down to the kitchen, grab whatever I can find and throw it into the soup.” At least that was how it originated. Today there is somewhat of a recipe. The locals know how to make it, but every cook adds their own touch. The basics are fish, plantain and yucca boiled in fresh coconut milk. Jorge (above) makes the best rondon I’ve tasted. He loves it’s flavor when cooked over a wood fire.
The second floor of Hidden Jungle Beach House has four bedrooms and a living room with cable TV. It also has a shared bathroom with a sink and a toilet. The bedrooms are simple. Three bedrooms have double beds and one has a single. Each room has a place to hang your clothes, shelves, desk or table and chair, mosquito nets and a fan, along with clean sheets and towels. If you are looking for a simple, economical place to stay in the quiet tranquility of the jungle but not far from all the activity, Hidden Jungle Beach House is the place for you.

Hidden Jungle Beach House is truly Puerto Viejo’s hidden treasure. You’ll love it’s relaxed and friendly vibes. You’ll sleep cozy and comfortable in the arms of mother nature. You’ll wake up to the sounds of howler monkeys, cute little geckos and a million different kinds of colorful birds.

SLOTH VIDEO
At Hidden Jungle Beach House we have many sloths living in the trees among us. We see them frequently meandering up and down the branches and across the ground.
